Team GB without fastest man Adam Gemili for 4x100

While Britain's star sprinters face a brighter prospect of finishing first in their heat without Usain Bolt to contend with, equally, the loss their fastest man in Gemili - who is resting up with Bolt for the 200m final - will be a big void to fill.

If Richard Kilty and company are to lay a marker down ahead of the final, they will need to put into practice the hours of practice spent perfecting the baton change - not to mention the sessions spent with sports psychologist attempting to iron out the mental blocks that have tripped the team up in the past.

Still got it

Yesterday, 48-year-old former Olympic champion Donghua Li of China wowed the crowds in Rio as he performed on the pommel horse.

Sporting a mop of grey hair, the Atlanta 1996 pommel horse champion Donghua Li walked into arena faking a slight limp before hopping onto the pommel to perform some of the moves that won him gold 20 years ago.

Money ball

While basketball continues to increase in popularity outside of America, invariably, the USA's domination of the sport at the Olympics continues to reflect the gulf in talent - and funding - available to other nations.

Heading into their semi-final against Spain tomorrow confident of securing their place in the gold medal match, the US men's basketball side have already set a new record for the best paid ensemble to have ever played the sport.

Collectively, the 12 members of the squad are valued at £195m, outstripping the class of 2012 by a cool £10m.

Rather than trouble themselves with live in the athletes village, the US men's and women's teams have been put up on the Silver Cloud luxury cruise liner moored in Rio's harbour for the duration of the Games.

Walking stick for Gatlin?

Usain Bolt has said his American rival is "getting old" after he failed to make it through to the 200m final last night.

"Everybody's in shock," Bolt told the BBC. "You can tell from the 100m he's getting old. It's a fact the older you get, the rougher it gets to double."

The Jamaican superstar made the comments after Gatlin - Bolt's fiercest competitor over the last four years - finished third in his heat.

Speaking after failing to qualify in the quickest loser spot, the American blamed his poor time on an ankle injury troubling him in the run up to Rio.

However, former Olympic champion and record holder Michael Johnson had a different take on his dismissal, arguing that Gatlin had underestimated the field by relaxing into the finish too early.

Hull and Matthew going strong in women's golf

Team GB's Charley Hull and Catriona Matthew are still in contention in the second round, as they trail the world number one Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand, who is six under.

Hull will be hoping to narrow the Thai's lead as she tries to better her current score of three under, while Matthew will be hoping she can move into a podium position as she builds on level par.

Neymar scores fastest goal in Olympic history - and then three more

With Brazil seeking their first ever gold medal in the men's football competition, the nation's hopes have fallen squarely on the shoulders of the 24-year-old.

And yesterday he lived up to all expectations, scoring four goals against Honduras to secure his side's progression to the Olympic final.

Wasting no time in opening his goal-scoring account, the Barcelona forward netted within 15 seconds of the game starting - a new Olympic record.

While Brazil's favourite son was injured by his efforts in front of goal, clattering into the Honduras goalkeeper as he put the ball into the net past a one-on-one challenge, he soon shrugged it off to return to the field and find another three goals in his side's 6-0 demolition of their South American rivals.

Brazil will now face Germany in the gold medal match, as they look to make amends for the calamitous 7-0 thumping in the  2014 World Cup semi-final.
