Manchester United transfer news and rumours: Jose Fonte "flattered" by Old Trafford link, Raphael Varane still wanted by Jose Mourinho, Matteo Darmian to join Napoli

Matteo Darmian's ommission from United's matchday squad against Bournemouth fuelled speculation about his future at Old Trafford, withCalciomercato believing that he may have played his last game at the club.

Antonio Valencia appears to be Jose Mourinho's preferred choice at right back, having featured in both the Community Shield and yesterday's clash on the south coast.

The Italian outlet have linked Darmain - who only signed from Torino last summer - with a move back to Serie A, with Napoli being the front runners to secure his signature.

Jose Fonte flattered by United rumours

Southampton captain Jose Fonte has admitted that he is flattered by rumours linking him with a move to Old Trafford, but remains focused on his current role with Southampton.

In an interview with Mais Futebol, he said: “If the interest in there, it is a reason to be flattered to be associated with a club like Manchester United.

“But I have a contract with Southampton, and I’m just focused on my work, to make a great season.

“I will not deny that Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world and that it makes me happy to be associated with it. But to be Manchester United’s player is a big difference.”

Recap of yesterday's news

According to ESPN, Manchester United have opened informal talks with Southampton over a possible deal to sign Jose Fonte.

It has been well reported that Jose Mourinho is keen to add a defensive leader to his back line, and with the acquisition of Leonardo Bonucci looking even more unlikely, the reported £8m purchase of Fonte appears to be the most feasible option.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho is still keen on signing Raphael Varane, with ASclaiming that he is still United's preferred option.

However, in order to even think about making an offer for him, the Spanish outlet claim that United must sell in order to raise funds for the transfer.

Linked with a move away, however, is the versatile Daley Blind, who is wanted by Inter Milan.

The Times claim that their new manager, Frank De Boer -who coached Blind at Ajax  - would be interested in signing the 26-year-old this summer.

Speaking after his side's friendly win over Celtic yesterday, De Boer said: "We have a lot of good defenders here but we’ll see. But I like him as a player for sure, he’s fantastic.

"He is very happy at Manchester United though and played in the Community Shield.

"Of course, any of my ex players at Ajax are guys I like to keep an eye on and watch them very closely.

"I do the same with [Christian] Eriksen, [Toby] Alderweireld, all of those guys. I like to follow them and I do the same with Daley Blind.

"I know his situation and I think he’s very happy and playing with confidence but we’ll see in the future."
